Paul Gascoigne appeared on This Morning yesterday to talk about his recent struggle with alcoholism and mental health problems. Gazza revealed that 2008 was a blur. Thankfully on This Morning Gazza looked very well.

From an early age Gazza showed promise and was snapped up by Newcastle United at 17. By 21 he was capped for England, and in the 1990 World Cup he won the hearts of an entire nation with his footballing brilliance and tears after learning that suspension would rule him out of the World Cup final if England got there (they eventually lost to Germany in the semi final on penalties). Gazza-mania ensued and another footballing highlight was scoring a wonderful goal against Scotland in Euro 96. His celebration of this goal caused controversy when he re-enacted the antics of a drunken night out. Gazza entered rehab in 1998 after then England coach Glenn Hoddle left him out of the World Cup squad. Paul’s addiction worsened, his marriage broke down and his mental health deteriorated. Last year, Gazza was twice held under the Mental Health Act. However this January, Gazza finished a successful stint at Tony Adams’ rehab clinic more determined than ever to turn his life around.

Gazza: My Story is the Paul Gascoigne autobiography. It is a fascinating read for football and non-football fans alike.
