Gadget Show presenter Jon Bentley tested some portable translators on The Gadget Show summer special last night.

First up was the Lingo Xplorer TTX-14 portable translator which translates and speaks over 840,000 words in 14 languages. It also boasts an FM radio, voice recorder and currency conversions.

The second portable translator was the Ectaco Partner EA900. It features voice to voice translation, a 697,000 word dictionary and language teaching features. There is also a text scanner and a video player. The unique feature of the Ectaco is that you can speak into it and it can convert what you’ve said into a different language. Very clever indeed.

The final Gadget Show portable translator was the Franklin TGA-495. It’s a 12 language speaking translator including a dictionary with 450,000 words and 12,000 phrases. There is also a built in MP3 player.
