An oldie this – the YouDoo Doll first appeared on Dragons’ Den back in 2007, but it re-appeared on last night’s special Dragons’ Den: the Dragons’ Story, which focused on the only female in the Den, Deborah Meaden.
The brainchild of 27 year old Sarah Lu from Brighton, the YouDoo Doll is a customisable make-your-own-doll aimed at the novelty market. Sarah wanted £35,000 for 20% of the YouDoo Doll business. The YouDoo Doll comes with a blank doll which you can put anyone’s face on, also some clothing which you can also personalise and add any slogan you want to.
Deborah Meaden saw an opportunity to make money out of the YouDoo doll and offered the full amount, but for more than twice the amount of equity that Sarah Lu had initially planned to give away – 45%. Despite James Caan undercutting Deborah and offering Sarah a better deal, Sarah decided to accept Deborah’s offer based on what she thought Deborah could bring to the company.
YouDoo doll has been very successful thanks to Sarah Lu and Deborah Meaden, and has now branched out into YouDoo Dogs – customisable make-your-own-pet dolls.
