Channel 4 recently showed a re-run of one of Derren Brown’s most controversial TV shows. Entitled Derren Brown: Messiah, the show saw Derren travel to America to meet five leading ‘experts’ in various belief systems including Christian Evangelism, alien abduction, new age theories and contacting the dead through psychic medium.
At the beginning of Derren Brown: Messiah, Derren explained that his goal was to try to persuade these people to endorse him to their communities using a mixture of magic, suggestion, mind tricks and showmanship.
The results were astonishing - four out of five people endorsed Derren whilst the other one, the Christian pastor, wanted to meet again before he offered a full public endorsement.
Some of the mental powers of persuasion, deduction and magic tricks Derren Brown used in Derren Brown: Messiah are explained in more detail in his book. The book is titled: ‘Tricks of the Mind’.
‘Tricks of the Mind’ by Derren Brown is Derren’s first book aimed at general public consumption. Derren covers a wide range of topics including the art of hypnosis, the psychology of magic and reveals how some of the tricks he performs in his shows are done.
Tricks of the Mind contains an excellent section on memory, including strategies for improving your own memory retention and giving you the ability to remember huge lists of items instantly.
