Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip for the Nintendo Wii was the second of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. Simon Rimmer’s daughter was in the Something for the Weekend studio to demonstrate the game. Gadget expert Ella Williamson explained that Shaun White Snowboarding was also available for PS3 and XBox 360, but the one used on the show was the Nintendo Wii version, compatible with the Wii Fit balance board which costs around £70.

Shaun White Snowboarding for the Wii utilises the Wii balance board. You stand on the board and shift your balance from side to side to turn as you would on a real snowboard. By bending your knees and pushing up you can perform jumps, and stunts can be executed using the Wii-mote which you hold in your hand.

The Gadget Show, Uncategorized, Video Games No Comments »

Jason Bradbury counted down The Gadget Show’s top 5 computer games for Christmas. Here are the games featured, from 5 to 1:

5) Lego Batman

Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury remarked that sometimes all you want is a simple game that’s quick to load and fun to play, and Lego Batman on the Nintendo DS fits the bill perfectly. Lego Batman is the latest in the successful Lego series of computer games which includes Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones. The aim is to make it through the 30 levels fighting your way through using classic Batman moves and gadgets faithfully recreated in Lego form, and collecting as many Lego bricks as you can along the way.

Lego Batman for the Nintendo DS is an easy to play, great fun and distracting game. Get it now in time for Christmas.

Lego Batman is also available on other formats

4) Spore

Spore for the PC is from the makers of The Sims. Gadget Show presenter Jason said it could possibly be the biggest game in the history of games. You start off as a single celled organism floating around in a big sea. By eating everything you come into contact with you grow and grow, evolving as you eat particular cells. You control the evolution of your character through four different stages, ending up in the conquest of space. Apparently the space element of Spore is almost a separate game in its own right, with 50,000 planets to explore in the Spore universe.

3) Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip

Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip is available for most formats including PS3 and XBox 360, but perhaps the most exciting version can be found on the Nintendo Wii, where the balance board from Wii Fit can be used as a virtual snowboard. Tilt backwards, forwards, left and right as you would on a normal snowboard – the controls for the Wii version of Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip are intuitive and lifelike. Only a couple of buttins on the Wii-mote are used to perform tricks – everything else is controlled by your own sense of balance on the board. The Gadget Show presenter Jason thought this game would also do well for Travel Agents by giving people the snowboarding bug.

2) Tom Clancy’s EndWar

tom clancys endwar Top 5 Video Games for Christmas as seen on The Gadget Show

Ton Clancy’s EndWar for XBox 360 and other formats came in second place in The Gadget Show’s Top 5 Computer Games for Christmas feature. It is an action strategy game in which you control a World War III army, but it’s how you control the army which makes the game unique. You may have already seen adverts on TV for Tom Clancy’s EndWar – using a headset you can control the game by only using your own voice. Ordering troops around couldn’t be easier than barking out orders from your sofa. The voice command system is amazingly responsive. But Tom Clancy’s EndWar isn’t a gimmick of a game - it is a solid strategy game with the added bonus of the voice controls.

Little Big Planet is a PS3 exclusive, meaning it will not appear on any other platform. It is number one in The Gadget Show feature of the Top 5 Video Games for Christmas. Jason Bradbury described Little Big Planet as ‘kind of odd…but in a really good way’. You begin by customising the look of your fabric character, or sackboy. There are 50 weird and wonderful levels in the form of a 2D/3D platformer. It is totally unique, and totally beautiful.

Using the level editor you can even create your own levels, then share them with the PS3 online community. Conversely you can play other peoples levels, meaning that the replayability factor of Little Big Planet for the PS3 is basically endless. Little Big Planet is receiving rave reviews for it’s gameplay, concept, creativity and its original and innovative graphics. The Gadget Show’s Suzi Perry said that Little Big Planet was the most gorgeous computer game she’d ever seen.

wii music Wii Music as seen on The Gadget Show

On last night’s The Gadget Show Jason and Suzie played Wii Music, a game which Jason Bradbury said they had been waiting for for weeks. Wii Music is released this week, and according to Suzie Perry is ‘hilarious’. Basically you use the Wii-mote and the Nunchuk attachment to play different musical instruments. There are 60 instruments available to play in total, ranging from guitar to saxaphone to drums. If you have Wii Fit you can use the balance board to act as drum pedals, with the Wii-mote and Nunchuk as the drumsticks.

Multiplayer is where Wii Music comes into its own, with support for up to 4 players each playing a different musical instrument in the same ‘band’. The Gadget Show presenters Jason Bradbury and Suzie Perry said that whilst their playing on Wii Music wasn’t going to win any awards for music, it was good fun. Wii Music is shaping up to be one of the biggest selling games this Christmas.

Today in Declan’s Tech Shed on Working Lunch they discussed computer games. Working Lunch presenter Declan asked the studio experts including Duncan Best what video games to look out for this Christmas, and here is what they said would be the biggest game:

Little Big Planet is a PS3 (Playstation 3) exclusive title aimed at the younger market. It is a 2D side-scrolling platformer featuring cute little dolls called sack people. Perhaps the biggest draw of Little Big Planet is the ability to create your own sack people and levels from scratch using a whole range of easy to use design tools, then upload the levels onto the PSN (the Playstation online network) for other people to play. Alternatively you will be able to play levels that other people have created and uploaded to the Little Big Planet network, giving you a potentially never ending, infinite number of levels to play. Little Big Planet is released on Bonfire night.

Little Big Planet as seen on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross

Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Video Games No Comments »

Last night in between guests Ricky Gervais and Gordon Ramsey, Jonathan Ross introduced two ‘sackboy’ characters of him and Ricky (complete with David Brent beard).

For those of you who are wondering what ‘sackboys’ are, they are characters in the upcoming PS3 exclusive game ‘Little Big Planet’, a side-scrolling 2D/3D platformer which is set to become the must have computer game this Christmas.

Originally due for release in early October, the game has been delayed a further few weeks. The cause of the delay is that one of Little Big Planet’s background songs licensed from a record label to be used in the game apparently contains a couple of expressions that can be found in the Koran. The current release date for Little Big Planet is 24th October according to Amazon.
