Jeremy Clarkson caused quite a stir during his appearance on The One Show recently, when he suggested that the people on strike in the UK should be rounded up and shot. Jezza is no stranger to controversial comments and not the type to keep his mouth shut around sensitive subjects – he once described Mexican food as ‘refried sick’. Though many people despise Jeremy Clarkson, many more people love him. He’s a true ‘marmite’ character.
Jeremy Clarkson’s The One Show outburst has probably done wonders for his new book’s publicity. Entitled Round the Bend, his new book has been described as Jeremy Clarkson at his brilliant best. It’s packed full of interesting facts and anecdotes about every topic you can imagine, including (not surprisingly) cars. This book will make a great stocking filler for any Jeremy Clarkson fan at just £8.

Comedy pair Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington appeared on The One Show to talk about their new DVDs, both of them out in time for Christmas. The new DVD from Ricky Gervais is called Ricky Gervais Live 4 – Science. On The One Show they showed a hilarious clip from the DVD of Ricky talking about autograph hunters. “Even trainspotters look down on autograph hunters” according to Ricky Gervais.
Ricky also told One Show presenters Chris Evans and Alex Jones about his new sitcom, co-written again by Stephen Merchant, entitled ‘Life’s Too Short’. It is a fake documentary about the life of Warrick Davis, a mid-life crisis and a career ‘on the skids’.

Karl Pilkington is a close friend of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. He shot to fame as a result of his appearances on Ricky’s XFM radio show where Karl worked as a producer. A string of mega-successful podcasts followed, and now Karl Pilkington has his own DVD. An Idiot Abroad originally screened on Sky 1, and is a travel program with a twist – it’s presented by ‘an idiot’ according to Ricky Gervais. Follow Karl as he takes in the Seven Wonders of the World, and marvels at sights like the pyramids “crap design”, the Taj Mahal “probably shit at the back”, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio “Jimmy Hill-ish” and plenty more. An Idiot Abroad is hilarious. A fantastic Christmas present.

This time of year is very difficult for the 4 million dogs in Britain who are soundphobic and are badly affected by the constant barrage of fireworks displays taking place all over the country. A dog’s hearing is approximately 3 times more sensitive than a human’s, which means that the bangs and shrieks can be very disturbing for a dog. The One Show did a report on the worst affected dogs, ones whose owners had abandoned them. Most end up at Dog’s Trust, a dog charity helping to rehome abandoned dogs.

This Saturday is the world’s greatest steeplechase, the Grand National, and The One Show’s Claire Balding was on hand to give viewers a brief history of the event last night.
The Grand National is the most and gambled upon horse race in Britain. At 4 and a half miles long and with 30 purpose-built fences, it tests the stamina and skill of both horses and jockeys. Taking place at Aintree, this year’s Grand National will no doubt be as exciting and nail-biting as all that have gone before it.

On last night’s The One Show there was a guide to insurance products. Apparently 25% of us have no home contents insurance, and with the recession biting it’s predicted that many more people will follow suit, leaving millions under insured and facing potential financial disaster.
Independent expert Which? recommends you should not cut back on home insurance even when times are difficult. The cost of average home contents insurance is around £70 per year. This could cover the loss of around £1000 from the average burglary, and helps to insure some of the £30,000 cost of a flood.
The One Show expert stressed the importance of having home contents insurance, but said there were things you could do to reduce the cost. One option is to pay annually instead of monthly, or you could raise your excess. Make sure you’re not duplicating insurance, eg getting home contents insurance then a separate insurance policy for an electrical item like a computer – because the insurance would be duplicated and you would be paying more than necessary.
