No real surprise that the Apple iPhone was named Gadget of the Decade on last night’s The Gadget Show. The iPhone has been a massive success across the world and is a seriously advanced bit of kit. The tactile, innovative touchscreen, the millions of downloadable apps from the App Store, the built in GPS, internet browser, email, organiser, ipod, picture viewer, camera, video player, video camera - did we mention it also functions as a phone. The iPhone was championed by most of The Gadget Show presenters and it managed to beat off competition from Sky Plus, the Nintendo Wii, Adobe Photoshop and other great gadgets that have made this past decade great in terms of tech.
The Apple iPhone as seen on The Gadget Show: Gadget of the Decade is available on O2 and now Orange, PAYG or contract, from The Carphone Warehouse, Amazon, or the official Apple, O2 or Orange websites.

John Bentley looked at cameras and camera gadgets on this week’s The Gadget Show as he went up against professional phtographer James Nader in a digital camera challenge.
For the action shot Jon used the Casio Exilim EX-FH20 which can shoot an astonishing 40 high resolution 7 megapixel images per second - perfect for action shots.
For the landscape shot the Gadget Show presenter tried the Fuji FinePix Real 3D W1. This is a true 3D digital camera, effectively the Fuji is 2 10 megapixel cameras working together. The lenses capture 2 simultaneous images, and the 3D camera then combines these images to produce a 3D camera or stereoscopic image in exactly the same way as human eyes do. The 2.8 inch screen on the Fuji 3D camera lets you view the pictures you take in full 3D.
Finally, for the water shot, Jon used the Panasonic Lumix FT1. The Panasonic looks like any normal digital camera, but it has a hidden trick up its sleeve. Thanks to the extra rubber sealing and a tough layer of glass over the lens of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1, this 12 megapixel digital camera is waterproof to a depth of 3 metres. The 4.6 times optical zoom incorporates a wide angle.

Suzi Perry tested the very best climbing gear gadgets on this week’s episode of The Gadget Show. Her first bit of gear was an Asics Inner Muscle Ashford sleeveless R-neck top. At around £25, this inner muscle top contains special panelling that is supposed to improve your posture and help your core stability whilst climbing. It also claims to get 5% more oxygen into your lungs.
Next up were the La Sportiva Speedster climbing shoes. These climbing shoes have extra sticky soles to help give you some grip whilst climbing. The rubber compund on the sole is only 3mm thick so you can feel the wall better than normal climbing shoes. It claims to give 30% more friction than its competitors.
The Arc’teryx S-240 was the climbing harness used by Suzi Perry. It is 244 grams and hardly feels like it’s there at all. Unlike traditional harnesses the Arcteryx spreads your weight over the whole structure and not just a thin band of mesh.

Suzi Perry investigated the best climbing gadgets on this week’s The Gadget Show. The Freedom Climber is an ingenious use of climbing technology aimed at making indoor climbing less space consuming. The Freedom Climber is essentially a rotating wall, unpowered - keep climbing and the wall keeps rotating, giving you a great climbing workout without the need for safety harnesses and masses of space.

Gadget Show presenter Jon Bentley tried to find the best flatscreen TV for a bedroom. Apparently 19 inches is the average size for a bedroom TV. Unless you’ve got a huge bedroom, you don’t want a huge 50 inch plasma telly hanging on the wall. Here were the contenders for the best flatscreen telly, in order from best to least good as decided by The Gadget Show:
1) Sharp LC19SH7E - £219.99 - The Sharp had a good picture, decent sound and an attractive price, making it The Gadget Show’s favourite bedroom TV. We’ve found it cheaper than The Gadget Show advertised best price: £194.99 from Play.com
2) Sony KDL-19L4000 - £254.99 - The Sony Bravia TV received 2 G’s for it’s good sound and lots of sockets, but this doesn’t make up for its average picture and clunky design.
3) Panasonic TX-L19X10 - £284 - 2 G’s for the Panasonic too. It is easy to use but has a relatively poor picture quality.
Overall, the Sharp was the Gadget Show’s best bedroom TV.

Gadget Show presenter Jon Bentley tested some portable translators on The Gadget Show summer special last night.
First up was the Lingo Xplorer TTX-14 portable translator which translates and speaks over 840,000 words in 14 languages. It also boasts an FM radio, voice recorder and currency conversions.
The second portable translator was the Ectaco Partner EA900. It features voice to voice translation, a 697,000 word dictionary and language teaching features. There is also a text scanner and a video player. The unique feature of the Ectaco is that you can speak into it and it can convert what you’ve said into a different language. Very clever indeed.
The final Gadget Show portable translator was the Franklin TGA-495. It’s a 12 language speaking translator including a dictionary with 450,000 words and 12,000 phrases. There is also a built in MP3 player.

The Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR compact camera is the best on the market according to The Gadget Show Summer Special last night. It costs around £230 and has some excellent features. It comes with a revolutionary 3 in 1 EXR sensor for the best picture quality possible.
Gadget Show presenter Ortis was impressed with the overall balance of the Fujifilm FinePix which was lighter than Jason’s Panasonic compact camera. The EXR sensor on the Fujifilm gives you 3 camera modes in one - highest resolution, most dynamic range or lowest noise to take better quality photos.
Whilst both are excellent, The Gadget Show presenters decided that the Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR was the better compact camera due to its small size, light weight design, excellent colour and picture quality especially in low light.
