show left 300x153 Zeebox App as seen on Something for the Weekend, Free

Zeebox was the last item featured on this week’s Something for the Weekend gadget round-up. It’s a free app available for iPad owners, coming to iPhone and other platforms soon. Zeebox is a social media app dubbed ‘the new way to watch television’.

Zeebox works with Sky and Freeview, and it knows what you’re watching. It features a tweet stream relevant to the TV show you’re watching, and shows you which shows are most popular in real time. Zeebox also allows you to buy relevant stuff, and view relevant links connected to whichever TV show you are watching. Tim Lovejoy said that plans are afoot to stream live TV through the app, so you can watch and interact at the same time, on the same device.

Gadget girl Lucy showed off Zeebox’s live Twitter stream and news links. She said it was an essential hub with which to access everything related to the TV show you are watching. News, links, tweets, information and more. On top of all this, you can connect with all your facebook friends via this clever app – to chat about the show you’re watching with it’s built in messenger, or just to let your friends know what you’re watching and what you think of it. Peter Jones said that Zeebox was undoubtedly the future of television and TV interaction. He loved it.

The HTC Rhyme was the second of this week’s Something for the Weekend. It isn’t intended to be an iPhone killer, as gadget girl Lucy explained – it’s more of a mid-range smartphone. The HTC Rhyme is more affordable than most smartphones, but still packs some serious kit – make no mistake the HTC Rhyme is a very good mobile phone.

Tim Lovejoy suggested that the HTC Rhyme is designed for ladies, with the little colourful charm which could hang out of a handbag and lights up when you receive a call. It comes with some cool tangle-free headphones and a dedicated dock. Pop the HTC Rhyme into the dock and it goes into landscape mode. It can then be used as a desktop or bedside alarm. The dock sits the HTC Rhyme at the optimum viewing angle for watching movies. The sound quality for listening to music on the HTC Rhyme was pretty good too. Peter Jones, of Dragons Den fame, was impressed by this phone and HTC as a company as a whole.

FireText Smoke Alarm as seen on Something for the Weekend

p3946 main 300x300 FireText Smoke Alarm as seen on Something for the Weekend

The FireText Smoke Alarm was the first of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. Our first thought was that a smoke alarm that sends you a text message when it goes off is a bit ridiculous, but it can actually be put to very good use. If you’re not at home and a fire starts in your house, let’s say from a faulty electrical cable, the text you immediately receive from the smoke alarm will allow you to call the fire brigade who can hopefully whizz round to your house and put the fire out before it has chance to take hold and reduce your dwelling to a smouldering pile of ash. It is also great for owners of business premises in this respect, and can save an absolute fortune worth of damage through it’s early warning system.

The FireText Smoke Alarm, as Something for the Weekend gadget girl Lucy explained, is also great if you’ve got elderly relatives. The Fire Text Smoke Alarm contains it’s own SIM card which can text up to 4 different numbers at once. So, you can have peace of mind that Nan’s house isn’t going up in smoke. This texting smoke alarm is surely the future of smoke alarms.

There was a special Halloween theme for this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets round up. Halloween gadgets and Halloween outfits turned the SFTW studio into a mildly scary place. Here were the Halloween gadgets and outfits featured on the show:

First up was the Mummy Costume which costs £34.95. It is made of stretchy spandex and it’s official name is a MorphSuit. The mummy design seen on Something for the Weekend is guaranteed to scare, but it’s also available in skeleton or zombie designs.

Next was a cute Halloween baby pumpkin outfit from Tesco, £10. It isn’t currently available on the Tesco website but they do have a whole range of baby and toddler halloween outfits here, or a similar baby halloween outfit for £10 from Marks & Spencer here.

These Dracula Halloween outfits cost £10 from ASDA complete with waistcoat top, trousers, cape and mask.

The boys who modelled the Dracula costumes also showed us the Hexbug Spiders. The Hexbug Spiders come in various colours and they have 360 degree rotation, controlled by a small handheld remote control unit. A great stocking filler.

Next up was a boy modelling a cool skeleton costume based on The Nightmare Before Christmas character Jack Skellington, including long sleeved top, waistcoat, trousers, mask and detachable bat. At £12.50 it’s a bargain halloween outfit.

The Mobi Headphonies are little speakers for your mobile phone or MP3 player which manage to pump out some great sound considering their small and portable dimensions. They also look really cool. Advertised on Something for the Weekend for £19.99 but we’ve found them a little bit cheaper here

The halloween witch outfit was from Wilkinson and only costs £5. It comes with a witches hat and broomstick accessory. The little girl wearing this outfit also brought on a Monster High Doll called Spectra Vondergeist. Apparently Spectra is the daughter of the Ghost and she can float through walls to hear school gossip. This Monster High doll comes with stand, pet, diary and accessory. Bill Bailey’s son Dax showed us a scary werewolf outfit from Sainsburys, £12-14, and gave it the thumbs up. Unfortunately this isn’t available to buy online, but we’ve found an equivalent werewolf outfit from Matalan for just £5 here

Tru Blood is a drink just perfect for a Halloween party. It looks like blood – O Positive to be exact; but it tastes like a delicious blood orange carbonated drink. It’s inspired by the hit US TV Show True Blood.
