YOTEL is the new business adventure by former Dragons Den regular Simon Woodroffe, creator of the Yo! brand. Everyone is familiar with Simon’s Yo! Sushi outlets, but now his new venture is a new range of innovative new hotels. YOTEL is a capsule hotel, found at major airports. The ‘cabins’ have been designed by the same man who designed the BA First Class cabins, and it was sitting in First Class that gave Simon Woodroffe the idea.
YOTEL rooms are small capsules but size depends on the price you pay, and being just moments walk from check-in or arrivals at major airports of the world such as Gatwick and Heathrow, they are ultra-convenient. Theo Paphitis appeared on Working Lunch today for a business chat with Working Lunch presenter Naga Munchetty. Theo Paphitis is best known for being a multi-millionaire Dragon from the BBC2 hit show Dragon’s Den, but he began his career as a lowly tea-boy. Now though, Theo Paphitis is worth an estimated £125 million. He has transformed high-street retailers La Senza and Ryman’s, and activity company Red Letter Days with fellow Dragon Peter Jones.
In 2008 Theo Paphitis released a book called Enter the Dragon, which tells his story from rags to riches and is a must read for any budding entrepreneur or fan of Dragons Den. Theo Paphitis admitted on Working Lunch to never having a unique idea in his life. Theo said the secret of success is in the executing of ideas better than anyone else in that particular sector – it doesn’t have to be a new idea.
Theo Paphitis told Working Lunch that despite the current economic downturn in Britain, he remains incredibly optimistic. The reason for his optimism is that now is a great time to start a business in terms of the amount of help available for budding entrepreneurs, in terms of mentoring, investment and networking.
Enter the Dragon by Theo Paphitis is available to buy online now.

An oldie this – the YouDoo Doll first appeared on Dragons’ Den back in 2007, but it re-appeared on last night’s special Dragons’ Den: the Dragons’ Story, which focused on the only female in the Den, Deborah Meaden.
The brainchild of 27 year old Sarah Lu from Brighton, the YouDoo Doll is a customisable make-your-own-doll aimed at the novelty market. Sarah wanted £35,000 for 20% of the YouDoo Doll business. The YouDoo Doll comes with a blank doll which you can put anyone’s face on, also some clothing which you can also personalise and add any slogan you want to.
Deborah Meaden saw an opportunity to make money out of the YouDoo doll and offered the full amount, but for more than twice the amount of equity that Sarah Lu had initially planned to give away – 45%. Despite James Caan undercutting Deborah and offering Sarah a better deal, Sarah decided to accept Deborah’s offer based on what she thought Deborah could bring to the company.
YouDoo doll has been very successful thanks to Sarah Lu and Deborah Meaden, and has now branched out into YouDoo Dogs – customisable make-your-own-pet dolls.

The Baby Loves Disco idea was brought into the Dragon’s Den by American Andy and Naomi Timperley from the UK.

Andy and Naomi were first into the Den and were looking for a £100,000 investment for a 10% stake in Baby Loves Disco UK Limited.
Baby Loves Disco was started in the US in 2005. The premise was simple: to create an event that children and parents can enjoy together. Baby Loves Disco was started in New York City, and is now in 30 cities in the US.

Martin Wadsworth from Atherton near Manchester walked into the Dragon’s Den looking for a £150,000 investment for a 10% stake in his company Discrete Heat, who manufacture and supply an innovative and energy efficient form of room heating – heated skirting boards.
According to Martin last night on Dragon’s Den, his skirting board heating solution was preferable to radiators and underfloor heating. Radiators are disliked by homeowners for cosmetic reasons, and are not particularly energy efficient due to the way they convect the heat rather than radiate the heat. Underfloor heating is difficult to retro fit involving the uprooting of floorboards, and can be very costly.
James Caan described the skirting heating as ’pretty neat’ as a concept. Duncan was worried about the cost of installing the skirting board heating to the homeowner, but Martin stood up well to the verbal sparring with Mr Bannatyne.
