Last night we saw the penultimate episode of An Idiot Abroad 2, the hilarious travel series starring Karl Pilkington, and the birth of the Pilko Pants. Karl climbed Mount Fuji in this episode, and on the way he tried Sumo wrestling, cat stroking, sleeping in the smallest hotel room you’ve ever seen and Zen Buddhism meditation. Through the series Karl has visited some spectacular places and done some amazing things – Africa, the Arctic, swimming with sharks, Route 66, whale watching.

At the end of this particular episode of An Idiot Abroad, Karl had an epiphany – he decided he wanted to invent something which he could leave behind after he’s gone. ‘Behind’ being the operative word, because what he came up with after hours of deliberation and thinking were the ‘Pilko Pants’. The idea is simple – the Pilko Pants are a pair of inflatable pants which provide cushioned support for sitting on hard surfaces. Number 1, Karl explained, it solved the problem of getting a cold bottom when you sit down on a cold rock. Second, the Pilko Pants provide comfort when you most need it.

Of course, the Pilko Pant is still a prototype and as soon as they become available you will be able to buy them right here. In the meantime, we’ve found a similar alternative to the Pilko Pants.

Karl Pilkington doesn’t get many perks from Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant. When he was tasked with travelling Route 66 in America for his series An Idiot Abroad 2, Karl was hoping for a nice flashy convertible in which to enjoy his journey. Instead, Ricky arranged a Smart Car for him.

The Smart ForTwo Cabrio is actually a great little city car, if not entirely suited to a long road trip like the one Karl Pilkington completed on An Idiot Abroad. This convertible Smart car is agile, small, comfortable, safe and eco-friendly – finding a parking space in this car is super-easy. It also looks pretty cool too (and pretty small alongside a monster truck as seen on An Idiot Abroad!). Karl’s Smart car was a convertible in white. He was filmed driving along Route 66 with the top down and the top on at different parts of his journey, and the serial complainer didn’t seem to complain much about this car.

Experience Route 66 like Karl Pilkington as seen on An Idiot Abroad 2 #idiotabroad

An Idiot Abroad, Travel No Comments »

On tonight’s episode of An Idiot Abroad, Karl Pilkington travels to the United States of America to tackle the famous Route 66, a road dissecting America from Chicago all the way across to California on the East Coast. Karl will be experiencing plenty of thrills and spills along the way, including a performance with a high school choir, a monster truck festival and a ‘cuddle party’ with new-age therapists which is bound to be hilarious.

Have you ever wanted to travel Route 66 like Karl Pilkington on An Idiot Abroad? It’s a trip that features on many people’s bucket list. Route 66 is dubbed The most famous road in the world and the Mother Road. Billy Connolly recently experienced it’s delights and you can now buy his DVD. The iconic 2488-mile journey starts in Chicago and meanders south west. It was used by those who migrated west during the Dust Bowl of the 1930′s. The journey ends in Santa Monica, California.

Travelling down the historic Route 66 you will see so much of America. Along the way you’ll experience the delights of Chicago, a sprawling US metropolis. Then you’ll leave the big city behind, encountering the kind of drive-ins and diners you’ve seen in countless US movies. Amarillo and cowboy country is a highlight, as is the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, the Las Vegas Strip and Santa Monica Beach. Prepare to have an experience of a lifetime as you meet a whole host of interesting people along the way.

Some like to do Route 66 as a planned excursion, with every hotel stop booked along the way. You can book this kind of deal here

Others like to do it their own way. Get to Chicago, get a car or bike, and hit the open road, checking yourself into motels and hotels along the way as and when you need to.

Visit Walmer Castle as seen on Royal Upstairs Downstairs

Today on Royal Upstairs Downstairs, Rosemary Schrager and Tim Wonnacott visit Walmer Castle in Kent. Walmer Castle was built in 1540 as part of the monarch Henry VIII’s coastal defences. It has now been restored and transformed into a stunning English stately home with wonderful gardens. It’s current resident is Lord Warden but this English Heritage site is open to the public. It used to be the home of the Duke of Wellington.

The Royal Upstairs Downstairs presenters discover that Walmer Castle was visited in 1842 by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. They find out how the monarch’s carriage got stuck in the castle’s archway. Food historian Ivan Day prepares consomme in the gardens.

Ride a Segway as seen on Celebrity Coach Trip #coachtrip

Today’s episode of Celebrity Coach Trip saw Brendan guide the Z-listers to Rome for the final day of the trip, where they learnt how to make pizza the real Italian way. It’s been an exhilarating trip for the coach trippers at times, but what they did on the last day was one of the most enjoyable: a tour of Rome on a Segway.

A Segway is an ultra-cool way to travel. It’s an advanced vertical scooter which you control with your own balance. Lean forward to go forward, lean backwards to stop. It only takes a few minutes to master a Segway, and after that the fun you get out of it is immense. Going to Rome to ride them like the Celebrity Coach Trip gang is a dream that many simply can’t afford at the moment, but the good news is that Segways are now available to ride in the UK.

We’ve teamed up with Buyagift to offer a ‘Segway rally for two’ experience, where you and a friend will get to ride these scooters at one of 12 different locations in the UK. A full training session will teach you how to handle the Segway at a laid-back pace, and once you’re confident you get to try the Segway rally track where you can really test your skills.
