Climbing Gear as seen on The Gadget Show

Sports & Leisure, The Gadget Show No Comments »

Suzi Perry tested the very best climbing gear gadgets on this week’s episode of The Gadget Show. Her first bit of gear was an Asics Inner Muscle Ashford sleeveless R-neck top. At around £25, this inner muscle top contains special panelling that is supposed to improve your posture and help your core stability whilst climbing. It also claims to get 5% more oxygen into your lungs.

Next up were the La Sportiva Speedster climbing shoes. These climbing shoes have extra sticky soles to help give you some grip whilst climbing. The rubber compund on the sole is only 3mm thick so you can feel the wall better than normal climbing shoes. It claims to give 30% more friction than its competitors.

The Arc’teryx S-240 was the climbing harness used by Suzi Perry. It is 244 grams and hardly feels like it’s there at all. Unlike traditional harnesses the Arcteryx spreads your weight over the whole structure and not just a thin band of mesh.

Heart Rate Monitors as seen on Working Lunch

Sports & Leisure, Working Lunch No Comments »

Heart Rate Monitors were the subject of Tuesday’s Working Lunch tech shed. Nick Morgan from the Lucozade Sport Sport Science Academy was on hand to explain the tech behind heart rate monitors.

Most of them are worn like a watch (and many have watch functions). They measure and monitor your pulse rate constantly and display the results on a LCD display. Some of the more expensive heart rate monitors on the market will chart your heart rate on a small graph display, or you can plug it into a PC and view your results on there. The Garmin Heart Rate Monitor at the top of the range has a built in GPS system telling you where you are and how fast you’re travelling. Great for hiking, jogging, cycling etc, the Garmin 310xt will cost around £289.94 when it is released next month.
