This time of year is very difficult for the 4 million dogs in Britain who are soundphobic and are badly affected by the constant barrage of fireworks displays taking place all over the country. A dog’s hearing is approximately 3 times more sensitive than a human’s, which means that the bangs and shrieks can be very disturbing for a dog. The One Show did a report on the worst affected dogs, ones whose owners had abandoned them. Most end up at Dog’s Trust, a dog charity helping to rehome abandoned dogs.

A Dog’s Life by Martin Clunes, as seen on The Alan Titchmarsh Show

Books, Pets, The Alan Titchmarsh Show No Comments »

Martin Clunes appeared on the Alan Titchmarsh show yesterday promoting his new book ‘A Dog’s Life’. Martin is a real dog lover and currently has three dogs. ‘A Dog’s Life’ is also kind of a book version of Martin’s recent TV series, ‘Martin Clunes: A man and his dogs‘, in which he talks about his dogs and the great impact they have on his life.

Alan Titchmarsh was amused that each of Martin Clunes’ dogs have two names. There is Mary Elizabeth, Tina Audrey and Arthur Colin. Martin’s cat is called Maisy Ann, and is actually a boy.

In the interview Martin explained how the TV series and book came about. On the set of Doc Martin, a production company came to do a behind the scenes feature, and there were loads of dogs around the resort, including Martin Clunes’ own dogs. The idea of doing a programme starring Martin about his dogs then emerged.

A Dog’s Life is more than just a book about how Britain are a nation of dog lovers - Martin documents how he travelled round the world to explore the history and geography of our fascination with canine pets, from Tanzania to Australia to Beverley Hills and Yellowstone Park.

It is a really fascinating read for any dog lover.
