The Dyson Air Multiplier (fancy name for a fan) was the first of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. Gadget expert Seema Parmar explained that this gadget fan’s unique selling point was it’s bladeless design, making the fan a lot safer than normal run of the mill fans. It also has a very cool (excuse the pun) design.

The Dyson Air Multiplier air flow can be adjusted by a knob on the front of the fan. It is very powerful when set on high. It sucks up the air around and throws it back 15 times more powerfully. It costs around £200 and comes in 2 sizes, 10 inch and 12 inch.

Need a gadget to fool your mates on April Fools Day? Look no further than the top 5 April Fools gadgets as seen on The Gadget Show last night, as described by new Gadget Show presenter Gail Porter. Here are the top 5 April Fool Gadgets from 5 to 1:

5) GotchaBox

gotchabox

The Gotchabox is a prank that could be used for April Fools, Christmas or any birthday. Gotchabox is a range of spoof gift boxes displaying outlandish and hilarious gadget presents that don’t really exist, like the USB toaster or the Kleen Stride Personal Debris Removal Systems.

4) RC Fart Machine

rc-fart-machine

The Fart Machine is an almost age old April Fools prank, but the RC fart machine brings this prank into the digital age, without the need to blow up a whoopee cushion.

3) Phantom Keystroker

The Phantom Keystroker came in at number 3 on the Gadget Show’s top 5 April Fools Gadgets. It looks like an ordinary USB memory stick, but simply plug it into the USB port of your intended prank victim, and it will play havoc with their computer keyboard, randomly alternating between Caps Lock for instance, and periodically inserting strange text.

2) Boss Voice Transformer VT-1

The Boss Voice Transformer is a telephone voice transformer, a vocal effects unit which processes your voice and allows you to change its pitch and frequency enabling you to sound just like the opposite sex.

1) Electric Shock Pen

The Electric Shock Pen is about as simple as april fools gadgets get. Simply leave the pen lying around, or hand it to a colleague to use. When they press the top of the pen it delivers a mild but alarming electric shock, guaranteed to have you in stitches and them not wanting to borrow any more pens from you.

All-in-one desktop PC’s are so called because the monitor, the base unit and a few other things are combined in a more elegantly designed unit than your bog standard PC. Last night on The Gadget Show, presenter Jon Bentley with the help of interior designer Linda Barker tested 3 of the best all-in-one PCs on the market.

First up was the Sony Vaio JS2E/S. It has a 20 inch screen, 3 Gig of RAM, a 500 Gig hard drive and cool silver finish. The JS2E/S performed well on The Gadget Show in terms of usability, a clear screen and decent processing power.

Next was the HP Touchsmart IQ500 PC with a 22 inch touchscreen monitor, 4 Gig of RAM, 500 Gig hard drive and glossy black plastic look. Jon said the HP would be a great choice for a Windows all-in-one desktop.

Finally the Apple iMac 20″ with a 20 inch screen, 2 Gig of RAM and a 320 Gig hard drive. The Apple iMac is housed in an anodised aluminium casing. The Apple iMac 20″ looks good and performs very well despite having less RAM and a smaller hard drive than the other 2 all-in-one computers.

In today’s credit crunch climate companies are looking to cut costs and run as efficiently as possible. Navman Wireless sell tracking devices that can be installed into company vehicles so that the company can see exactly where their salesmen, managers etc are at any given time and can track their route throughout the working day.

Navman Wireless combines satellite technology with the internet to pinpoint their tracked vehicles. Even if it seems a little ‘Big Brother’, the Navman Wireless should improve the efficiency and cut the costs of businesses with several company cars on the go.

How To Get A Job In A Recession by Harry Freedman as seen on BBC’s Breakfast

Books, Breakfast, Office No Comments »

how-to-get-a-job-in-a-recession

How To Get A Job In A Recession is a new book aimed at the rising number of credit crunch job seekers by Harry Freedman. Harry Freedman is Chief Executive of Career Energy. The businessman and author appeared on BBC’s Breakfast show this morning to offer some advice on the title of his book, how to get a job in a recession.

The first bit of advice on how to get a job in a recession by Harry Freedman was to be proactive. Jobs will not come to you, you have to go out, be proactive, get your name out and about by talking to people, and generally be visible. Harry said that waiting for job adverts in the paper was very passive and that jobs advertised in this manner were few and far between. The reason he gave was that companies had started to shun traditional paper advertising of jobs and increasingly rely on word of mouth – this method is far cheaper and more reliable from the employer’s point of view.

How to get a job in a recession is also about going back to basics according to Harry Freedman – look at everyone you know and think about how they can help you. For instance, calling people to tell them that you are considering a job in their industry, that you need to speak to various people and asking for introductions to the right people if possible. According to Harry the key to finding a new job in this recession is first increasing your contact list, after which point more avenues start to open up.

According to latest figures competition for jobs in the current climate is fierce, with around 10-12 people competing for any 1 job. Harry emphasised the positive fact that recessions always come to an end. He also said that confidence and positivity were key attributes of any successful job interviewee. Harry emphasised the importance of having a unique selling point – in today’s world many people are competing for the same jobs and have very similar CV’s. He said that as a prospective job candidate you need to work out what it is you offer that other candidates don’t or can’t offer, and make sure your prospective employer knows about it.

If you were in a particularly hard-hit industry and jobs in that sector are virtually non-existent, Harry would suggest you look at moving industries, but if you do this be sure to look for the ones you can transfer some of your existing skills to. For instance, if you used to work in a hard-hit by the recession customer services role, you should look at other industries which are likely to be doing better in this environment, for example supermarkets, defensive industries or home entertainment, or look at industries which are likely to flourish over the coming years such as green technology or manufacturing.

Harry Freedman’s new book How To Get A Job In A Recession is available now at a very reasonable £4.99.
