This week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets included a 3D headset, a new Samsung tablet/phone hybrid and a piano teachin app for the iPad.

First up was the Sony 3D headset, or to give it it’s official name, the Sony Head Mounted Display (Sony HMD). The Sony HMZ T1 3D headset is being manufactured for the mass market due to popular demand for the product.

As you can see from the pic, you’re gonna look like a Star Trek character wearing the HMZ T1. This may or may not appeal to you, but what is bound to appeal is the HD and 3D experience you can get from this headset. 2 0.7 inch 720p OLED screens work together to give you an amazing 3D picture, and the speakers built into the Sony 3D headset produce virtual surround sound that is crisp and clear. This gadget will immerse you fully into whatever you choose to watch on it. It can be hooked up to a PS3 or a Bluray / DVD player allowing you to play games in 3D or watch movies on it. Using this 3D headset is like watching a film at the cinema.

The price of the Sony HMD HMZ T1 is around £800. When you consider that this is much cheaper than your average 3D TV, it doesn’t seem too pricey. It’s available to pre-order from the Sony website.

Next up was the Samsung Galaxy Note. Your initial reaction to the Note may be ‘Wow, that’s a giant smartphone’, but Samsung has positioned this device somewhere between a tablet and a smartphone, aiming to provide the best of both worlds. The Samsung Galaxy Note has a 5 inch screen, full phone functionality but the bigger screen allows for improved web browsing and media viewing. The Note comes with an S pen, a multifunctional stylus which enables you to do things like annotate documents, web pages or pictures. A digital scribe’s dream.

The final Something for the Weekend gadget was the Ion Piano Apprentice. This mini keyboard and app are designed to teach you how to play the piano. You download the Ion Piano Apprentice app onto your iPad from the App Store, then your iPad slots into the mini ion keyboard. The app and keyboard automatically sync, and the keys on the Ion Piano Apprentice keyboard light up when they need to be played. The iPad displays a video simultaneously telling you exactly what you need to do. Reginald D Hunter said it was kind of like Simon Says for a piano. At £80 it’s a great Christmas present for anyone who wants to learn how to play the piano.

The HTC Rhyme was the second of this week’s Something for the Weekend. It isn’t intended to be an iPhone killer, as gadget girl Lucy explained – it’s more of a mid-range smartphone. The HTC Rhyme is more affordable than most smartphones, but still packs some serious kit – make no mistake the HTC Rhyme is a very good mobile phone.

Tim Lovejoy suggested that the HTC Rhyme is designed for ladies, with the little colourful charm which could hang out of a handbag and lights up when you receive a call. It comes with some cool tangle-free headphones and a dedicated dock. Pop the HTC Rhyme into the dock and it goes into landscape mode. It can then be used as a desktop or bedside alarm. The dock sits the HTC Rhyme at the optimum viewing angle for watching movies. The sound quality for listening to music on the HTC Rhyme was pretty good too. Peter Jones, of Dragons Den fame, was impressed by this phone and HTC as a company as a whole.

Best apps of 2010 as seen on The Gadget Show

Mobiles, The Gadget Show No Comments »

Suzi Perry was asked to compile her top 5 best apps of 2010 on The Gadget Show Winter Special. A tricky undertaking, given the 300,000 apps she had to choose from on multiple platforms including iPhone and Android apps. Here were the best apps of 2010 according to Suzi Perry and The Gadget Show:

5. Google Goggles, free – this brilliant app puts the fun back into tiresome internet searching by using the camera on your mobile to carry out visual searches. Google Goggles scans the photo you’ve taken and searches for relevant matches. This could be a household object, a brand logo, a wine label or a landmark, in which case the Google Goggles app is aided by the built in GPS of your mobile phone.

4. iMovie, £2.99 – the iMovie app is designed specifically for the iPhone 4, with it’s ultra high-res retina display and the multi-touch screen. According to Gadget Show presenter Suzi, the iMovie app is really intuitive. You can shoot the footage on iMovie and edit it right there and then on your iPhone. You can also add music and titles.

3. Hipstamatic, £1.19 – Hipstamatic is an iPhone application which gives a 70′s style retro look and feel to your pictures. Select from a choice of lens, flash and film effects before taking your photo. Hipstamatic processes your images in seconds and allows you to share them on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

2. PingChat, free – PingChat is a unique social networking app which allows you to send pictures to your friends for free. Sending an image via a text usually falls outside of your phone contract’s inclusive free texts bundle and can cost 20p or more for every image you send, so PingChat is a very good alternative allowing you to send images for free.

1. Angry Birds, £0.59 – Angry Birds has been a gaming sensation on mobile phones. This gaming app is ultra-addictive and is available on a variety of platforms. The aim of the game is to launch your birds from a catapult and destroy the evil green pigs. Angry Birds Seasons is a Christmas special edition of the game and is available for download now.

So those were the best apps of 2010 as seen on The Gadget Show. Do you agree with their verdict? Let us know below!

These Touch Screen Gloves were the second of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. At £12.99 they are an excellent buy in time for Christmas. With the freezing conditions around the country at the moment, gloves are a necessity. The problem with normal gloves though is that you have to take them off if you want to use your touch screen phone. Not so with the 5 point touch screen gloves.

The Five Point Gloves, or Touch Screen Gloves as they are also known, use conduction technology to allow you to use your touch screen whilst wearing the gloves – really handy in cold conditions. A special conductive material is woven into the thumb and fingers of the gloves, so that regardless of which finger you use to operate your touch screen phone, it still works. Regardless of what you want to do on your touch screen phone in the cold – take a picture, play a game, send a text or an email – the five point touch screen gloves make it easy, and keep your hands warm at the same time.

Samsung Galaxy Tablet as seen on Something for the Weekend

The brilliant Samsung Galaxy Tablet was the second of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. The first tablet from Samsung is a sleek and small entry into the multimedia tablet market. Ella Williamson said that this Galaxy Tablet was really giving the iPad a run for its money. It is smaller than the iPad, and has 4 killer features which make it an enticing prospect.

The Samsung Galaxy Tablet has an SD slot. It has an internal memory of 16 GB, but with the SD slot you can considerably extend the memory with a 32 Gig SD Card. It also functions as a phone thanks to it’s SIM-card slot. The operating system of the Samsung Galaxy Tablet is Android 2.2 which gives you access to Android Market and hundreds of thousands of apps. It has both a front-facing and a back-facing camera with video recording function in portrait or landscape. Finally it supports flash websites, putting it ahead of the iPad in web-browsing terms.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy Tablet is a fantastic bit of kit, and at around £500 it is a real alternative to the iPad.

Something for the Weekend priced the Samsung Galaxy Tablet at £500 – £600, but we’ve found it much cheaper at £469.

No real surprise that the Apple iPhone was named Gadget of the Decade on last night’s The Gadget Show. The iPhone has been a massive success across the world and is a seriously advanced bit of kit. The tactile, innovative touchscreen, the millions of downloadable apps from the App Store, the built in GPS, internet browser, email, organiser, ipod, picture viewer, camera, video player, video camera – did we mention it also functions as a phone. The iPhone was championed by most of The Gadget Show presenters and it managed to beat off competition from Sky Plus, the Nintendo Wii, Adobe Photoshop and other great gadgets that have made this past decade great in terms of tech.

The Apple iPhone as seen on The Gadget Show: Gadget of the Decade is available on O2 and now Orange, PAYG or contract, from The Carphone Warehouse, Amazon, or the official Apple, O2 or Orange websites.

Save money on phone calls as seen on Working Lunch

Mobiles, Working Lunch No Comments »

Yesterday Working Lunch looked at government helplines which could make your money troubles worse if you call them on a mobile. Calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers can cost up to 20 pence a minute and if you’re left holding for half an hour which is often the case, it all adds up to a nasty phone bill.

Working Lunch presenter Declan pointed out that a number of Working Lunch viewers had recommended a website, www.saynoto0870.com. This website lists a directory of local code numbers which can be called as an alternative to expensive 0870 or 0845 numbers, helping you save money on calls.

118800 is a new directory enquiries company which has a database of millions of personal mobile phone numbers. Using 118 800 you can easily track down somebody’s mobile phone number by simply providing their full name and address. The 118 800.com service is bound to be highly popular and useful to many but it is not without its critics who worry about the possibility of children being targeted and contacted through the service. It also raises questions about data protection. Shona Forster appeared on Working Lunch to allay people’s fears about the new service and to tell Working Lunch presenters Declan and Naga of the many benefits of the service.
