Bugatti Vera Kettle as seen on Something for the Weekend

Electronics, Food & Drink, Gifts & Gadgets, Home & Garden, Something For The Weekend No Comments »

bugatti-kettle

The Bugatti Vera Kettle was the first of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. Gadget girl Seema Parmar explained that this Bugatti kettle was a contemporary and highly technical kettle. You can program in your required water temperature onto the LED display on the handle, and the display will show the rise in temperature as the kettle boils. The Bugatti kettle is fairly quiet for a kettle, and the cone shaped design helps save on energy. The other cool feature is that the kettle can be set to boil at a certain time of day, eg 7am when you wake up for work.

Dyson Air Multiplier, Dyson Fan as seen on Something for the Weekend

Electronics, Gifts & Gadgets, Home & Garden, Office, Something For The Weekend No Comments »

dyson-air-multiplier

The Dyson Air Multiplier (fancy name for a fan) was the first of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. Gadget expert Seema Parmar explained that this gadget fan’s unique selling point was it’s bladeless design, making the fan a lot safer than normal run of the mill fans. It also has a very cool (excuse the pun) design.

The Dyson Air Multiplier air flow can be adjusted by a knob on the front of the fan. It is very powerful when set on high. It sucks up the air around and throws it back 15 times more powerfully. It costs around £200 and comes in 2 sizes, 10 inch and 12 inch.

Best Small Flatscreen TV as seen on The Gadget Show

Electronics, Home & Garden, The Gadget Show No Comments »

Gadget Show presenter Jon Bentley tried to find the best flatscreen TV for a bedroom. Apparently 19 inches is the average size for a bedroom TV. Unless you’ve got a huge bedroom, you don’t want a huge 50 inch plasma telly hanging on the wall. Here were the contenders for the best flatscreen telly, in order from best to least good as decided by The Gadget Show:

1) Sharp LC19SH7E - £219.99 - The Sharp had a good picture, decent sound and an attractive price, making it The Gadget Show’s favourite bedroom TV. We’ve found it cheaper than The Gadget Show advertised best price: £194.99 from Play.com

2) Sony KDL-19L4000 - £254.99 - The Sony Bravia TV received 2 G’s for it’s good sound and lots of sockets, but this doesn’t make up for its average picture and clunky design.

3) Panasonic TX-L19X10 - £284 -  2 G’s for the Panasonic too. It is easy to use but has a relatively poor picture quality.

Overall, the Sharp was the Gadget Show’s best bedroom TV.

Wheelie Bin Lid Lifter as seen on Dragons’ Den

Dragons Den, Home & Garden No Comments »

Lid Lifter creators Lawrence Webb and Frank Drewett appeared on Dragons’ Den to pitch their Wheelie Bin Lid Lifter invention. The Wheely Bin Lid Lifter is a clever and innovative device featuring an easy to install pedal system which allows anyone to open a wheely bin without using their hands. In effect, the lid lifter gizmo turns a wheely bin into a pedal bin. This is very useful to the disabled and for people carrying 2 bin bags or more at the same time. It also removes the chance of catching germs and bacteria by having to touch the lid of the wheely bin.

The lid lifter creators were looking for £50,000 for a 25% stake in their product.

Save money on Electricity Bills as seen on Working Lunch

Home & Garden, Working Lunch No Comments »

In the Working Lunch tech shed today, Declan Curry looked at ways to save money on your electricity bill. First up was a company called VPhase who have developed a device called the VX1 to bring down the voltage round your home without affecting any of your electrical appliances. Chief Exec Lee Juby likened his product to loft insulation in that the VX1 is similar in cost and has the same money saving effect on the whole home. On average, the VX1 is set to save you 10% of your electricity bill. It will be ready to be installed in homes in a few months’ time.

From next year the government is bringing in a feed-in tariff which will give you money for energy you produce yourself, nicely offsetting the cost of solar panels or similar money-saving and eco-friendly devices that you may be thinking of installing in your home.

Energy saving lightbulbs are a more immediate solution. Some are now dimmable, making them more handy for use round the home. Energy saving lightbulbs are around 80% more effective than traditional light bulbs.

Thermafleece is an alternative form of loft insulation which uses all natural sheepswool to insulate your loft. No side effects, no chemicals used in Thermafleece which is great if you suffer from allergies to that kind of thing. It was described on Working Lunch as a great use of a natural product.

trueCall as seen on Dragons’ Den - stop nuisance phone calls

Dragons Den, Electronics, Home & Garden No Comments »

truecall

trueCall is the brainchild of entrepreneur Steve Smith, who entered the Dragons’ Den looking for a £100,000 investment in his trueCall device, which stops nuisance phone calls.

trueCall stops nuisance phone calls. Unwanted telephone calls are an increasing and annoying phenomenon. The trueCall unit as seen on Dragons’ Den simply plugs into your telephone line at home, in between your wall socket and telephone.

trueCall screens every call you receive before it allows your phone to ring. If the call is from a friend or family member it lets the call through as normal. However if it doesn’t recognise the number, it asks them to identify themselves.

The Dragons were impressed with the technology behind trueCall, and the way it filters your phone calls so that telemarketers and other unwanted callers never cause your phone to ring. Once a caller has identified themselves using the trueCall system, you can decide to accept the call, add the caller to your friends list, ask trueCall to take a message, or ‘zap’ the caller, asking them politely but firmly not to call again.

Eco-friendly Patio Heater as seen on Dragon’s Den

Dragons Den, Gifts & Gadgets, Home & Garden, Other No Comments »

patio-heater

Eddie walked into the Dragon’s Den to showcase his company’s range of eco-friendly patio heaters, one of which was called Zeus. Whilst some of the Dragons including Theo Paphitis had misgivings about Eddie’s attitude, others such as Peter Jones saw good value and innovation in the product. Eddie ended up refusing the offer on the table to seek investment elsewhere.

The patio heaters are eco-friendly, safe, waterproof and effective.
