Big Brother is back on our screens with a bang for the 2009 series. Last thursday Davina announced the 16 contestants and the initial twist – none of them are proper housemates until they have earned full housemate status. First to earn housemate status was Rodrigo and Noirin followed by Lisa and Kris. Last night Saffia, Charlie and Karly completed Special Forces tasks to earn the right to sleep in the Big Brother bedroom.

Current Big Brother 2009 favourite is Brazilian bi-sexual Rodrigo followed by gay geordie Charlie and ladies man Kris, but this early in the competition the odds are subject to wild change. More housemates are expected to arrive as the weeks progress and the tension builds and nerves begin to play a part.

This Saturday is the world’s greatest steeplechase, the Grand National, and The One Show’s Claire Balding was on hand to give viewers a brief history of the event last night.

The Grand National is the most and gambled upon horse race in Britain. At 4 and a half miles long and with 30 purpose-built fences, it tests the stamina and skill of both horses and jockeys. Taking place at Aintree, this year’s Grand National will no doubt be as exciting and nail-biting as all that have gone before it.

The new Formula 1 season is back this weekend for a new season, and back on the BBC after a long stint on ITV. The season kicks off in Melbourne with the Australian Grand Prix this weekend. Defending F1 champion Lewis Hamilton will have his work cut out this season with the McLaren team really struggling for pace in practice.

British F1 fans needn’t despair however, because Jensen Button has a real shout this year with his new team Brawn GP – Jensen has been leading the pack in practice sessions in Barcelona and should be a real F1 title contender this year. Brawn GP was borne out of the old Honda team, and run by Ross Brawn formerly of Ferrari. Others likely to be challenging for pole position are Robert Kubica of BMW, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikonnen and Felipe Massa.
