On The Gadget Show Christmas Gift Special, Suzi and Polly tried to find the perfect gadget gifts for guys Jason and Ortis. Here are some of the gadgets they considered:

One for the budding chefs who also have a passing interest in chemistry. This Conical Flask Oil and Vinegar set looks great and makes a great talking point at any dinner party. Stephen Merchant loved this Something for the Weeekend gadget.

This shower radio is shaped t look like a bottle of shower gel so it looks better in your shower. Advertised for £29.99 on Something for the Weekend but we’ve found it 30% cheaper

An expensive Swiss Army Knife from Victorinox – this is due to the 32GB encrypted USB stick which makes you feel like a super spy. If you’re looking for a cheaper Swiss Army Knife this Christmas, try this one from Amazon for £15:

For decades now the focal point of many a living room has been the television, quietly beaming hours of entertainment to an expectant family. And while this remains the case, the television isn’t just confined to your living room anymore. Gadget Show presenter Ortis Deley looked for the best budget television for your bedroom, and here was the winner:

Hanspree 28 inch SV28LMNB TV

This Hannspree 28 inch TV took the prize of Best Bedroom TV according to The Gadget Show for a variety of reasons. The SV28LMNB only has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 scart, but Ortis Deley considered this more than enough for him and his bedroom. The remote has a nice weight to it, is well laid out and easy to read. Whilst not overly attractive, the EPG of the Hannspree SV28LMNB was functional. Picture quality in both HD and SD is very good.

This week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets included a 3D headset, a new Samsung tablet/phone hybrid and a piano teachin app for the iPad.

First up was the Sony 3D headset, or to give it it’s official name, the Sony Head Mounted Display (Sony HMD). The Sony HMZ T1 3D headset is being manufactured for the mass market due to popular demand for the product.

As you can see from the pic, you’re gonna look like a Star Trek character wearing the HMZ T1. This may or may not appeal to you, but what is bound to appeal is the HD and 3D experience you can get from this headset. 2 0.7 inch 720p OLED screens work together to give you an amazing 3D picture, and the speakers built into the Sony 3D headset produce virtual surround sound that is crisp and clear. This gadget will immerse you fully into whatever you choose to watch on it. It can be hooked up to a PS3 or a Bluray / DVD player allowing you to play games in 3D or watch movies on it. Using this 3D headset is like watching a film at the cinema.

The price of the Sony HMD HMZ T1 is around £800. When you consider that this is much cheaper than your average 3D TV, it doesn’t seem too pricey. It’s available to pre-order from the Sony website.

Next up was the Samsung Galaxy Note. Your initial reaction to the Note may be ‘Wow, that’s a giant smartphone’, but Samsung has positioned this device somewhere between a tablet and a smartphone, aiming to provide the best of both worlds. The Samsung Galaxy Note has a 5 inch screen, full phone functionality but the bigger screen allows for improved web browsing and media viewing. The Note comes with an S pen, a multifunctional stylus which enables you to do things like annotate documents, web pages or pictures. A digital scribe’s dream.

The final Something for the Weekend gadget was the Ion Piano Apprentice. This mini keyboard and app are designed to teach you how to play the piano. You download the Ion Piano Apprentice app onto your iPad from the App Store, then your iPad slots into the mini ion keyboard. The app and keyboard automatically sync, and the keys on the Ion Piano Apprentice keyboard light up when they need to be played. The iPad displays a video simultaneously telling you exactly what you need to do. Reginald D Hunter said it was kind of like Simon Says for a piano. At £80 it’s a great Christmas present for anyone who wants to learn how to play the piano.

The FireText Smoke Alarm was the first of this week’s Something for the Weekend gadgets. Our first thought was that a smoke alarm that sends you a text message when it goes off is a bit ridiculous, but it can actually be put to very good use. If you’re not at home and a fire starts in your house, let’s say from a faulty electrical cable, the text you immediately receive from the smoke alarm will allow you to call the fire brigade who can hopefully whizz round to your house and put the fire out before it has chance to take hold and reduce your dwelling to a smouldering pile of ash. It is also great for owners of business premises in this respect, and can save an absolute fortune worth of damage through it’s early warning system.

The FireText Smoke Alarm, as Something for the Weekend gadget girl Lucy explained, is also great if you’ve got elderly relatives. The Fire Text Smoke Alarm contains it’s own SIM card which can text up to 4 different numbers at once. So, you can have peace of mind that Nan’s house isn’t going up in smoke. This texting smoke alarm is surely the future of smoke alarms.

The world’s smallest camera featured on The Jonathan Ross Show tonight. Jonathan Ross produced the camera from behind his desk, and showed the audience that it was basically the size of his fingertip. The World’s Smallest Digital Camera is quite elusive in the UK at the moment – none of the major retailers stock this item. The creator of the world’s smallest camera is a company called Hammacher Schlemmer, but at $100 plus $75 shipping costs it’s a bit pricey for UK consumers.

You can, however, buy the World’s Smallest Digital Camera on eBay, for just under £25 – a great stocking filler for any gadget lover this Christmas.

Jonathan Ross forgot to mention that this tiny camera also shoots video along with 2 megapixel still images.

This week’s Something for the Weekend gadget round-up was a bumper edition with a special back to school and back to uni theme. Here were the gadgets featured on the show:

LiveScribe Echo Smart Pen, £180

The LiveScribe Echo Pen is a great little gadget for students as it records everything you hear, say and write, and links the audio recordings to your notes. You write on special livescribe paper which cleverly records all you write. Notes can be saved to yor laptop or PC for easy access after your lessons/lectures. The LiveScribe Echo SmartPen can record up to 8GB of notes and audio although there are 4GB and 2GB versions also available.

ION Docuscan, £120

The ION Docuscan is essentially a portable scanner, and it’s really useful as the Something for the Weekend gadget girl explained. You simply scan your document through the small portable device and the Docuscan will save it to an SD card in clear JPEG quality. It’s also great for scanning photos, and you can view and zoom in on your scanned images using the 2.4 inch screen on the device.

Swan Teasmade, £60

The Teasmade was huge in the 80s, and despite a subsequent decline in popularity it has returned with a bang – can you think of a more suitable gadget for students? Place the teasmade beside your bed, add some water, pop a teabag into the pot, set the alarm and the teasmade will wake you up in the morning with a cup of hot tea (or coffee) waiting for you.
